The Daily Long Cast

Patents

Castalia Outdoors has announced the availability of its Sharkfin reel spool design to the North American market.  The spool enables farther casts while preventing line tangles on spinning reels.

The Original Sharkfin Patent is the World’s first of its kind, providing farther casts and preventing tangles on spinning reels, with a worldwide PCT (Patent Cooperation Treaty) pre-dating any similar products’ patent documents by 20 months as documented by the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office).

Guenther Burk - Inventor of The Sharkfin Spool Design The Sharkfin spinning reel spool, the original and world-standard reel upgrade, offers quality and features that no other spinning reel offers.  Its popularity in Europe has resulted is sales during 2009 of more than 65,000 units as of July, 2009.

The Sharkfin spool is uniquely designed to cast farther and prevent line tangles or “birdnests” often encountered with spinning reels. The design reduces friction on the line during the cast, allowing the angler to cast farther and providing greater accuracy and less line stress. The “fins” also retain the dreaded line loops that cause tangles on traditional spinning reels, and freely releases them on the next cast. The Sharkfin is used like any standard spool, is braid-friendly, and works with all reel-recommended line diameters.

Introduced at the June 2005 EFTTEX Show in Warsaw, Poland, the Sharkfin design has both International and U.S. Patents. The Sharkfin was invented and engineered in Germany in 2004 by Guenther Burk, and the design received an international patent in 2005, making its debut in Europe. The Sharkfin has received patents throughout Europe (35 countries), the North America, United Kingdom, Korea, China, Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Its distribution today includes Germany, Belgium, Poland, Italy, France, Norway, South Africa, the Netherlands and now North and South America.

“This invention will change the traditional way of fishing and casting, and the bonus is that the Sharkfin needs no explanation or training to use,” said Burk. “We are also willing to share this idea with manufacturers who are interested in the concept.”
Since 1985, Burk has owned Paladin (Pal-a-deen) Germany, a leader in the production and distribution of outdoor-related products throughout Europe. Paladin Germany, along with its sister company, Paladin China, offers fishing and outdoor-related items under many brand names; products include rods, reels, lures, nets, fishing line, terminal tackle and more.
Castalia Outdoors, based in Central Florida, will provide the sales and distribution of the Sharkfin through retailers in the U.S., Canada, and Central and South America, and will also offer private labeling and product licensing.
